Hosted by: ATX Science Olympiad
Visit our Booth: Sunday, March 7, 2021, 12 p.m. - 4 p.m.
Recommended Grades: 6th, 7th, 8th
The Challenge: In this science-based Pictionary game, participants will choose a Science Olympiad topic to learn more about and play a modified game of Pictionary using terms from a given word cloud.
Topics include: Meteorology, Reach For The Stars, Machines, Circuit Lab, Elastic Launch Glider, Astronomy, Codebusters, Wright Stuff, Detector Building, and Game On.
Recommended Materials: This is an online activity, and a partner is preferred. Science Olympiad representatives will be available to participate during the event via chat in the booth.
How does this activity connect to STEM and today's Girl Day theme of Creating in Code: Computing, Cybersecurity, Robotics and Moving Around: Land, Water, Air, and Space? Science Olympiad events range from building efficient gliders to decrypting cyphers to analyzing meteorological data, and ultimately challenge students to communicate complicated processes in these fields to team members. Through these samples of real Science Olympiad competition events, you will explore the range of topics that Science Olympians master.
This activity can be done as a pair or individually. First, pick a video on a Science Olympiad based topic that interests you from the list below.
- Reach for the Stars
- Circuit Lab
- Elastic Launched Glider
- Wright Stuff
- Detector Building
- Game On
Once you’ve watched a video, chat with one of our members in our booth during the event where you’ll use your science knowledge to find words in the word cloud above. Each word will be indicated by visual or written clues. Try to guess as many as you can before time runs out!
Science Olympiad is a national academic competition in which teams of 15 middle or high schoolers compete in 23 different “events” covering topics from anatomy to engineering to electronic circuits. Events may consist of either taking a test, conducting a lab, building a device, or any combination of the three.
As an undergraduate-led student organization at the University of Texas at Austin, ATX Science Olympiad is dedicated to promoting creative problem solving, STEM literacy, and a love for learning in students across Texas. We host biannual Science Olympiad tournaments at the invitational and regional level, each hosting over 800 competitors on the UT campus. Outreach initiatives include hosting an annual Coaches’ Clinic to support starting and existing teams, promoting STEM participation through campus events such as ExploreUT and Girl Day, and mentoring local SciOly teams through specific event inquiries.
