Visit our Booth: Saturday, March 6, 2021, 12 p.m. - 4 p.m.
Activity from EngineerGirl
Recommended Grades: 6th, 7th, 8th
The Challenge: Design, Create, and Build Marshmallow Bridges Using 100 Toothpicks and 50 mini-marshmallows that holds at least 10 pennies and meets 3 additional requirements.
Design a bridge out of a limited number of toothpicks and marshmallows that is strong enough to support at least 10 pennies in a small cup. Your bridge must also meet the following requirements:
- It must span a gap of at least 10 cm in length
- No part of the bridge can touch the table or floor between the boxes or books.
- It must be at least the same width as the cup you’re using for the pennies
Share a video or picture of your design on Flipgrid.
- 100 toothpicks
- 50 mini marshmallows
- At least two flat and stable objects of equal size to prop up each end of your bridge (cereal or photo boxes are great for this)
- At least 10 pennies
- Small cup to hold the pennies (we recommend a small paper cup since it will add the least amount of weight)
If you don’t have the exact materials on hand – look around to see what other materials you can use instead. Check the EngineerGirl website for suggested substitute materials (bottom of page).
How does this activity connect to STEM and today's Girl Day theme of Moving Around: Land, Water, Air, and Space? Transportation engineers design bridges and roads, airports and subways, and other systems that help us move around our communities and world. Explore more about Bridge Design on the EngineerGirl website.
Check out this video from EngineerGirl. The EngineerGirl Design Challenge asks girls to design a bridge out of a limited number of toothpicks and marshmallows that is strong enough to support at least 10 pennies in a small cup.
